Fothergilla major 'Mt. Airy.' USDA zones 5-8. Nativar to most southeast states. 'Mount Airy' Fothergilla is a showy deciduous dwarf shrub thought to be a cross between the native F. gardenii and F. latifolia. The genus name comes from the English botanist and physician Dr. John Fothergill, and the cultivar name 'Mount Airy' is from the Mt. Airy Arboretum in Cincinnati, Ohio where the cultivar was discovered by Michael Dirr. It does best in acidic soils consistently moist but with good drainage, although it thrives under a wide range of conditions.
The best flowering occurs in full sun but it tolerates part shade. With interesting bottle-brush flowers in the spring, beautiful leathery green leaves through the summer, and brilliant red, yellow, or purple fall color, it provides year-round interest in the landscape. It grows to 4-6' tall x almost as wide, it has a rounded compact habit. 'Mount Airy' is resistant to browsing by deer. These are rooted cuttings, 3"-6" tall + roots.
These are still young, small plants, but they can easily sent to you and economically established in your yard or garden. Rooted cuttings are started from a parent plant and have all the same qualities as the parent. They can either be planted in pots, or directly in the ground. You can even bury a bundle of them in a pile of mulch for a week, a month, over over winter, covering all roots but leaving the foliage above the surface of the mulch. Then remove them from the mulch when you are ready to plant them. They can take some frost and freezing weather as long as the roots are under the surface of the soil or mulch.
