Chestnut, Chinese. Castanea mollisima. USDA zones 4-8. Chinese Chestnut is a medium size deciduous flowering tree. It can reach a height and spread of about 40 feet, with a round crown. The nut is edible, attracts wildlife, especially deer. Chinese chestnut makes a good shade tree in the landscape and has interesting fall color. It does well in full sun to partial shade and moist well drained soil. No known diseases or insect pests. It is resistant to chestnut blight, which has nearly wiped out the native American chestnut. Plant multiple trees for good nut production.
