Goat's Beard. Aruncus dioicus. Zones 4-7. Goat's beard, also known as buck's-beard or bride's feathers, is a medium-size perennial valued for its showy plumes, dark green foliage, and it grows well in a variety of growing conditions. It has a clump-forming growth habit and produces feathery plumes of numerous tiny cream flowers in the late spring to early summer, which arch on spikes over the foliage. The species is dioecious, meaning it has distinct male and female plants. The male plants bear flower clusters that are more erect than those on female plants, and many gardeners find them more attractive. Female plants produce tiny brown seed pods. Grows 4–6 ft. tall, 2–4 ft. wide in full sun to partial shade. Sold as a root.

Herbaceous perennials die back after their season, then grow back again every year for multiple years. Most of our herbaceous perennials do best in shady areas, as they have evolved as forest understory plants. Our herbaceous perennials are all straight species, and not cultivated varieties.
