Black Cherry. Prunus serotina. USDA zones 3-9. Black Cherry tree is native to most of the midwest and the entire eastern half of the US. When mature, it is a hardwood lumber tree of the highest quality. It is an excellent host to many insects and supports their life-cycle. It has showy, pendulous flowers in the spring, and dark, pea-shaped fruit in the late summer. It grows to 50-60′ tall, in full sun or partial shade. The small red or black fruits are a favorite food of more than 40 species of birds, not to mention, many mammals. Black Cherry also serves as the host plant for many butterflies and moths – more than 450 species, including: Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, Cherry Gall Azure, Viceroy, Columbia Silkmoth, Promethea Moth, Small-eyed Sphinx Moth, Wild Cherry Sphinx Moth, Banded Tussock Moth, Spotted Apatelodes and Red-Spotted Purple. 18-24" high+ roots.
