Nanking Bush Cherry, Prunus tomentosa, is a beautiful plant with many benefits, making it a wonderful addition to nearly any landscape. It stands out in early spring with its spectacular display of fragrant white to light pink blossoms, often blooming before the leaves even emerge, which creates a stunning, cloud-like effect. This dense, multi-stemmed shrub or small tree offers year-round interest, from its attractive, downy foliage and bright red, edible fruits in the summer to its decorative reddish-brown, exfoliating bark that provides texture in the winter.

Beyond its ornamental value, the Nanking Bush cherry is prized for its hardiness and adaptability. It is exceptionally cold-tolerant (down to USDA Zone 2) and, once established, can handle considerable wind and drought, making it an excellent choice for difficult climates or for creating a tough, edible hedge or windbreak. The prolific, tart-to-sweet cherries are a fantastic, low-maintenance crop, perfect for making delicious jams, jellies, and pies. By simply planting two or more shrubs for cross-pollination, you gain a beautiful, easy-to-grow plant that rewards you with an abundant harvest and provides food for local wildlife.

Nanking Bush Cherries are large, wide spreading shrubs with soft green foliage.  It grows 6-8′ high and wide. Plant them in an area with full sun to light shade and well-drained soil. Very cold hardy, it grows well in zones 2-7.

Nanking cherries can be eaten fresh, and the juice makes a refreshing drink and a beautiful, clear jelly. The fruit can also be used like any other tart cherry, though smaller than tree cherries. Early and productive, it has sweetly scented spring flowers that turn in to large crops of sweet fruit in July. Makes a wonderful, tasty hedge. Grows and produces best in full sun in well-drained soil. For best fruiting, plant two or more.

Sold as 18-24″ bare root seedling dormant plants, the best for shipping and planting into your yard.
