Willow, Black. Salix nigra. USDA z4-8.
The Black Willow tree, named for its dark bark, is native to most of the Central and Eastern United States. They can mature to heights of 30-60’ with a broad irregular crown and long, narrow, pointed leaves. The trees are not self-fertile, producing male and female catkins on separate trees. They are among the first to produce pollen and nectar for important spring pollinators and many animals, including domestic livestock as well as wildlife browse on the leaves in spring and the twigs throughout winter. The Black Willow also makes a great soil binder. Often found along the banks of streams and ponds, the superficial fibrous root system helps to prevent erosion. They prefer ample moisture.
Sold as a bare root plant, 18-24" plus roots.
