Currant, Red. Ribes rubrum. USDA zones 3-7. Thrives in full sun to partial shade. The Red Currant is a self-fertile deciduous shrub that grows 3-5’ high and wide. It is primarily cultivated for its small, rounded red berries.
Clusters of creamy pink 5-petaled flowers begin blooming in April, followed by shiny red berries. The berries may be eaten raw, but because of their bittersweet taste, many prefer to process them into jellies or jams. Currants also act as powerful antioxidants and work well in delicious tarts and pies.
Left on the bush, the berries attract birds and other wildlife. This woodland shrub is extremely frost tolerant and adaptable to a variety of soil conditions but prefers moist, well-drained soil.
Dormant, bare root plant, 12-18" tall + roots.
