Elderberry, American. Sambucus canadensis. USDA zones 3-8. This is the same plant as the updated name Sambucus nigra ss canadensis. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and grows 6-12' high and wide. It is also known as Black, Wild, or Common Elderberry. Needs at least two plants growing near each other in order to fruit well.
Native to PA and many other areas in the US, this deciduous suckering shrub has fruits that are attractive to wildlife. Its expansive, flat white flowers give way to clusters of black fruits in late summer. The fruit can be used to make delicious jams, jellies, pie fillings, and wine. Do not eat the berries fresh; they must be cooked before eating.
Elderberry has many health benefits; its berries are particularly rich in flavonoids, especially anthocyanins. These powerful antioxidants work to keep the immune system strong and resilient.
