Holly, Ilex glabra 'Nigra.' USDA zones 5-9. This is a cultivar of the native Inkberry Holly, and is nativar to all of east coast states, and west to Louisana. 'Nigra' is a dark leaved, dense, upright evergreen shrub with leaves that grow to the ground. If pollinated, the inconspicuous female flowers give way to inky-black berries that can persist well into winter. Ilex glabra is dioecious (separate male and female plants, needing both male and female plants to produce fruit.) 'Nigra' is a female selection, but can be pollinated by a number of other male hollies. Best planted in moist, slightly acidic well-drained soils. Grows to be 4-6' high and wide. These are rooted cuttings, 8"-12" tall + roots.
These are still young, small plants, but they can easily sent to you and economically established in your yard or garden. Rooted cuttings are started from a parent plant and have all the same qualities as the parent. They can either be planted in pots, or directly in the ground. You can even bury a bundle of them in a pile of mulch for a week, a month, over over winter, covering all roots but leaving the foliage above the surface of the mulch. Then remove them from the mulch when you are ready to plant them. They can take some frost and freezing weather as long as the roots are under the surface of the soil or mulch.
