Sweetspire, Itea virginica 'Merlot.' USDA zones 5-9. Boasting fragrant white flowers in June 'Merlot' has a nice compact size (3-4' high and wide) and shows brilliant burgundy fall foliage. A good replacement for Burning Bush, which is now prohibited in many states due to its invasiveness. These can easily be sent to you and economically established in your yard or garden. Rooted cuttings are started from a parent plant and have all the same qualities as the parent. They can either be planted in pots, or directly in the ground. You can even bury a bundle of them in a pile of mulch for a week, a month, over over winter, covering all roots but leaving the foliage above the surface of the mulch. Then remove them from the mulch when you are ready to plant them. They can take some frost and freezing weather as long as the roots are under the surface of the soil or mulch.
