Red Chokeberry. Aronia arbutifolia. USDA zones 4-9. Red Chokeberry grows well in full sun to part shade and reaches 6-10' high and 3-5' wide.
Its red berries are favored by wildlife and are edible as juice, syrup, or jelly, with sweetening. Red Chokeberry differs from Black Chokeberry in that its berries are smaller and red, ripening and maturing later in the fall. Berries stay on its branches into winter, providing a great, late food source for birds.
This is an excellent wildlife shrub and a perfect choice for naturalizing; it has a wide range of soil tolerance, including boggy soils. It is easily grown and creates visual interest in the fall with its brilliant wine red foliage. Its native to PA and other areas in the eastern US.
